The Bible claims to be the word of God – God’s inspired revelation of Himself and His Son, and His plan for the world. The Bible’s claim to truth is confirmed by its many future predictions that have actually come to pass – particularly predictions about Jesus Christ and God’s people Israel. This reassures us that the Bible has the authority to teach us how to live our lives today and that its multiple predictions of the return to earth of Jesus Christ and the resurrection of the dead will undoubtedly occur.

Almighty God is unique, eternal and altogether righteous. He is “from everlasting to everlasting” (Psalm 90:2). “… the LORD is upright; He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him” (Psalm 92:15). He also has future intent: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come” (Revelation 1:4 and 4:8). Almighty God is “a just God and a Saviour” (Isaiah 45:21). While He is infallibly righteous, He is also a merciful and redemptive God.

By contrast, it’s clear from our own experience and from the Bible that we inherit Adam and Eve’s mortality and their tendency to sin. We all die, not only because we are all mortal, but because we all sin. Sin, like an employer, pays its wages – namely death (Romans 3:23, 5:12, 6:23). Death is a state of total oblivion. Human beings and the animal creation share the same breath of life. When it leaves us we have no conscious existence (Psalms 104:29, 146:3-4; Ecclesiastes 9:5 &10). The only hope for us of life after death – even for those who are “in Christ” – is the resurrection of the dead when Christ returns (1 Corinthians 15:18).

The wonder of the Bible is that it contains God’s “exceedingly great and precious promises” which extend to us the prospect of becoming “partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4). This would involve us becoming free from sin and death, made to be incorruptibly righteous and deathless. These precious promises are to be found in the Old Testament – in the Garden of Eden and made later to Abraham and to King David. They clarify for us the place of reward and are corroborated and explained for our eternal benefit in the New Testament. This is what makes the Bible God’s handbook for life.
