Yes, Jesus Christ is alive today. There is strong evidence for the fact that he was resurrected from death. For a start, no one could produce a corpse to prove otherwise, even though the religious rulers of the day would dearly have loved to do so. Christ’s frightened and disillusioned company of disciples were transformed and galvanised into action as fearless and energetic preachers of the Gospel. Their message was founded upon the fact of his resurrection, and they hazarded their lives to proclaim it. Furthermore, they taught emphatically that the living Jesus Christ is going to come back to earth to fulfil his destiny to be King of the world – that is, to return literally, personally and visibly. He has momentously important unfinished business to accomplish as King of God’s Kingdom on earth.
Bible teaching about life after death is neither falsely over-optimistic nor gloomy and depressing. It’s impressively rational and realistic. The Bible does not teach that death is the immediate gateway to life for everyone. It teaches clearly that life after death happens only when Christ returns to the earth (referred to over 300 times in the New Testament). At that momentous world-changing time the bodily resurrection of the dead will take place. Up to that time those who have been given the opportunity to respond to God’s requirements will have been “asleep” in the oblivion of death. Those who are “in Christ” and are judged worthy will be given eternal life (1 Corinthians 15:12-23). This follows the pattern set by Christ’s own bodily resurrection.
