Responsible world governments are deeply worried. Highly dangerous situations continue to be prominent in the Middle East, in the Korean peninsular, and in European nations bordering Russia. Peaceful coexistence between the major powers is under threat. Furthermore, extremist Islamic terrorism can strike anywhere – even in Australia, as already experienced in an increasing number of nations.

United States and Russian intervention in the Syria civil war with their opposing aims have brought their relationship to a point that could lead to an all-out war between them that would also involve their associated client states. The movement of NATO troops into nations bordering Russia further heightens tension between the western powers and Russia. These two situations have revived the dangerous “cold war” situation of former decades. In addition, there is the ominous threat posed by North Korea flexing its nuclear muscles and goading the United States into taking actions which could have catastrophic consequences. These and other threats to world peace are leading to the curtailment of principles that have governed western democracies for decades. They have led to the election of “nationalistic” leaders and governments. These ominous developments have the potential to lead to more widespread ruinous warfare and the use of nuclear weaponry.

Apart from the foregoing “headline” tensions there are many more areas of conflict in the world today. There can be no solution to these growing threats to world peace without the supremacy of Almighty God and His righteousness. God’s inspired word, the Bible, predicts that the world will emerge from insoluble crisis to become a glorified and peaceful place. The Bible tells us repeatedly that Christ the Son of God will return to earth at a time of unprecedented crisis to establish God’s Kingdom. He will reign over the entire world, vanquish evil and achieve peace on earth. God’s word summarises beautifully the outcome of His intervention in world affairs:

“The work of righteousness will be peace, and the effect of righteousness, quietness and assurance forever.” (Isaiah 32:17)
